Division 3 Baseball at its Finest

Every baseball player dreams of getting drafted and playing in the Major Leagues.  Those that play college baseball at a Division 1 level are much closer than others to achieving this dream.  Division 3 ballplayers know that although they have a shot at getting drafted, the opportunity is very slim.  This past draft had only 13 players selected from Division 3 schools.

Chris Heisey, of the Cincinnati Reds, was one of those players who achieved their dream after playing at the D3 level.  Heisey attended Messiah College in Grantham, PA and was selected in the 17th round in the 2006 MLB draft.  At Messiah, he set single season records in total bases (106), hits (63), home runs (9), and longest hitting streak (14 games).  He also set career records in batting average (.405), total bases (294), doubles (41), and home runs (23).

On Wednesday, Heisey led off the second game of a double header against the Yankees with a home run off of Brian Gordon.  His first career leadoff homer.  Four innings later, Heisey homered again off Gordon, this time a 2-run shot.  Finally, in the eighth inning, he hit another 2-run homer off of Hector Noesi.  Heisey was greeted with a curtain call, another dream of all ballplayers.  This put the icing on the cake of the Reds 10-2 rout of the Yankees.

Heisey entered the game hitting .260 with 5 homers.  He definitely made many former and current D3 baseball players proud.  It shows that there is an opportunity to get drafted and make it no matter what college level one plays at.

The "pyramid" of pro sports must be tough for any athlete to go through - gotta give it to the Chris Heisey's of the world - they make the most of the talent they have with hard work, dedication, and a few breaks.....too bad that hard work and dedication had to pay off against the Yanks
