The Sugar Bowl has become one of the most prestigious bowls in the BCS system. The game has been played every year since 1935. The 2013 version of the game will be played on January 2 in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. New Orleans has been the host of the game since 1974, with the exception of 2006. Hurricane Katrina forced the game to be moved off-location due to the Superdome acting as a shelter for residents in need. The game has synonymous with the city and the spectacle it offers for the game.
The teams who participate in this game will be selected upon the conclusion of the regular season. Historically, the winner of the SEC will get an automatic bid, as long as that team does not qualify for the BCS National Championship. In the event that the SEC Champion does advance to the National Championship, the Sugar Bowl committee may select a school from any conference. The second team to participate in the Sugar Bowl will be a BSC team selected at-large by the Sugar Bowl committee. This will provide fans with an exciting opportunity to watch two teams who normally would not play each other.
